“Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” (Luke 24:1-7).

Beloved, can you imagine the shock and the impact it must have had on these women
when they heard the news that Jesus had risen from the dead just as He said He would?
No one had ever seen anything like this before. No one had ever raised from the dead of
his own power before. But now it had happened. The Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten
Son of God, who had just three days before died on the cross of Calvary, and now has
risen from the dead, victorious over death, hell, and the grave. What tremendous news this
is, and what great ramifications this has had on millions of people down through the ages
of time and on into eternity!
Let us look back for a moment at Job. Here was a broken man sitting in sackcloth and
ashes. His sons and daughters, and his many possessions had been taken away from him
by a most tragic event. As he looked at the remains of what was once a happy home, he
asked the question: “If a man die, shall he live again?”
Job’s question has been asked time and time again down through the ages. When we are
faced with death, our thoughts go naturally to the subject of life and death. Death is
coming to us all if the Lord doesn’t come soon. We cannot escape it. Death comes to us
on our streets and highways, in our own communities and homes. In our society today,
death is the most real fact of life. Like it or not, welcome it or dread it, sooner or later we
must all die. The Bible says in (Hebrews 9:27), “And as it is appointed unto men once to
die, but after this the judgment.”
But, my friend, for the child of God death is not the end. Death to the child of God is not
a reason for despair. Jesus said in (John 14:19) “...because 1 live, ye shall live also.”
You see, only the born again believer can look to the future with the certainty of hope,
because the risen Lord Jesus Christ is our hope. We need not fear death.
Now I would like to call your attention to some very important facts about the resurrection
of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Basic Fundamental, Foundational Doctrine of Christianity
Take away the resurrection of Christ, and we have no Christianity. Everything in the
Christian faith depends on the resurrection of Christ from the dead. We see this clearly in
(I Corinthians 15:12-19), where it says, “ Now, if Christ be preached that he rose from
the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there
be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen. And if Christ be not risen, then
is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses
of God: because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not
up, if so be that the dead rise not. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And
if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which
are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this Iife only we have hope in Christ, we
are of all men most miserable."
Here the Bible shows us plainly that everything stands or fall with the Lord's bodily
resurrection. It says if Christ be not risen, then our preaching is vain, our faith is vain, the
apostles were false witnesses, and we are yet in our sins, and those who have already died
have perished, and that Christians, of all people, are to be the most pitied. Beloved, there’s
no question about it, without the resurrection of Christ, there would be no Christianity.
The resurrection of Christ is clearly an essential part of the gospel of Christ which is the
power of God unto salvation. So the resurrection of Christ is the basis of the Christian
faith.
Important Part in the Application of Salvation
God raised the Lord Jesus Christ up and exalted Him to His own right hand on the throne
in heaven, that He might the Head of all things to the church. The Bible says in (Ephesians
1:19-22), “And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe,
according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought In Christ, when he
raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far
above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is
named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things
under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his
body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all."
If the Lord Jesus Christ remained in the grave, He could not save anyone. He had to raise
from the dead in order to impart, or give to us eternal life. A dead person cannot save
himself, let alone someone else. But Jesus has risen, and He gives eternal life to all those
who call upon Him with a repenting heart, believing and trusting in Him. So without the
resurrection there could be no salvation.

Shows the Power Of God
The standard, or the illustration God used in the Old Testament to demonstrate His power
was the power by which He used to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.
The yearly passover was a reminder of this mighty power. But when we come to the New
Testament, the standard or the illustration of God’s power is seen in the:
resurrection of Christ from the dead. It was impossible for death to hold the Lord. We see
this in (Acts 2:22-24), “Ye men of Israel, hear these words, Jesus of Nazareth, a man
approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him
in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: Him, being delivered by the determinate
counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified
and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was
not possible that he should be holden of it.”
Beloved, this same power which raised Jesus from the dead is the same power that saves
all believers, and is available to all Christians. Paul prayed that we might know; that is,
understand and experience the power of Christ’s resurrection in our daily lives. So then the
resurrection of Jesus Christ is the standard which God uses to express His power in the
New Testament. It shows the exceeding greatness of God’s power.
Having seen the importance of Christ’s resurrection, let us look now at the nature of His
resurrection.
It Was an Actual Resurrection
Jesus literally arose from the dead. There are those who teach that Jesus did not actually
die, but was drugged and fell into a swoon; that is, He only fainted and fell unconscious,
and the cool air and the spices in the tomb revived Him. But my friend, this is a gross
perversion of the Word of God. The Bible is very clear in declaring Jesus’ death. In Mark
15:37 it says, “And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.” This means
clearly that He died. When the spirit departs from the body, the person is dead. Then we
look at verses 43-45. “Joseph of Arimathaea, an honorable counsellor, which also
waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the
body of Jesus. And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the
centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. And when he knew it of
the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.”
Beloved, this is just one of the many scriptures which show us the great fact of Christ’s
death. Listen to the words of our Lord Jesus Christ in (Revelation 1:18) He said, “1 am he
that liveth, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys
of hell and of death.” So we see that the swoon theory is a lie, and an open denial of God’
s Word. We also see again that Jesus actually arose from the dead. His resurrection was
an actual resurrection.
It Was a Bodily Resurrection
Jesus arose from the dead bodily. There are many today who believe that Jesus arose from
the grave but not in a body. They teach that Jesus’ death and resurrection was one
experience happening at the same time. They say that in His death the Lord passed out of
physical life, and in His resurrection He passed into His spiritual life. Thus His death and
resurrection are declared to be simultaneous events. And they say that the appearances of
Christ after His resurrection are those of His Spirit and are merely hallucinations. But again
beloved, this is a gross denial of the Word of God.
Let us look at what Jesus said about His bodily resurrection. In (Luke 24:38-39) He said,
“And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not
flesh and bones, as ye see me have.” Here we see that Jesus had a body as He appeared
to His disciples in the upper room after His resurrection. He could be touched, He could be
seen, He ate food, He had feet and hands. Yes beloved, Jesus arose bodily from the grave.
David in Psalm 16:10, and quoted by Peter in Acts 2:31, prophesied that Christ’s flesh
would not see corruption. And Jesus was recognized by His own people after the
resurrection, even to the scars in His hands, feet and side. The Lord’s body was raised
immortal; that is, no more subject to death again. He lives forevermore, His resurrected
body is free from all the infirmities before His death, such as, weariness, hunger, thirst and
so forth. Our blessed Lord was crucified through weakness which He subjected Himself
to; but was raised in power, immortal, incorruptible, never to die any more; neither shall
death have any more dominion over Him. He lives forevermore, and has the keys, or
authority and power, over hell and death.
The Lord Jesus was raised very glorious; of which His transfiguration upon the mountain,
before His death, was an emblem or picture, yes, even a pledge. The Lord Jesus Christ is
now crowned with glory and honor bodily and will give us a glorified body when He
comes for His church. The Bible says in (Philippians 3:20-21), “For our conversation is
in heaven, from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall
change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body, according to
the working whereby He is able even to subdue all things unto Himself.”
Now my friends, this should show us beyond any shadow of doubt that Jesus Christ arose
from the grave bodily. Because He has a glorified body, we also should have a glorified
body.
Having seen the importance of Christ’s resurrection, that it is the fundamental basis of the
Christian faith, that it has a part in the application of our salvation, and that it is the New
Testament standard for the illustration of God’s power; and having seen the nature of His
resurrection, that it was an actual resurrection, and a bodily resurrection; let us now look at
the results of His resurrection.
It is a Testimony to the Death of Christ
In (Romans 1:4) the Bible says that Jesus “.... declared to be the Son of God with power,
according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.” The very fact that
Jesus arose from the dead proves that He was the eternal Son of God. No one has ever
raised from the dead by their own power. Only God has the power over death. Our Lord
Jesus arose because He was God in the flesh, the divine Son of Almighty God. The
resurrection is a sign of His deity and power.
Made The Lord Jesus Our High Priest
The Bible says in (Romans 4:25) that Jesus was, “...delivered for our offences, and was
raised again for our justification.”
Now here we see that Jesus was delivered for our sins and trespasses. You see, God
spared not His Son, but delivered Him up for us all. Because of our sins, because of
what we have done, and what we are as sinners, the Lord Jesus was delivered up by
God the Father to bear our sin, with all its guilt and penalty. It was here that God
forsook His only begotten Son in order that He could be able to save us.
Having died for our sins, and this is why Jesus died, if He had not raised from the dead,
we would not know if our sins were atoned for. We would not know if His payment for
our sin was accepted by Almighty God. But because He has risen, we know that the
death of Christ fully paid the price and was fully accepted by God the Father. Yes, we
have full confidence that God has accepted Christ’s sacrifice for our sins, because He
has risen from the dead.
Assures Us the Acceptance of His Redemptive Work as the Sacrifice for Our Sins
Through the resurrection the Lord Jesus became our intercessor and advocate, or
protector. In (Romans 5:8-11) the Bible says. “But God commended His love toward
us, in that while we were yet sinners, Ghrist died for us. Much more then, being now
justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if, when we
were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, being
reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only so, but we also joy in God
through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.”
Now here we see that we were reconciled by the death of Christ. His death has
reconciled us to God. We are no longer enemies of God, but we are at peace with Him,
But not only are we reconciled to God by the death of Christ, but we shall be saved by
His life. You see, this means that the Lord’s present resurrection ministry as our great
High Priest in Heaven is keeping us saved. We see this great truth in (Hebrews 7:22-25).
There it says, “By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. And they
truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:
but this man, because He continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him,
seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” So we see that by the
resurrection, Jesus became our intercessor and protector. He not only delivers us from
bondage of sin, but He also intercedes for us, and especially in the time of need. What a
tremendous blessing this is!
Yes, my friends, Christ Jesus lives! Jesus Christ arose from the grave and lives today.
You can anchor your faith on this great fact.
Now I want to direct your thoughts to one more fact as I close today. In (I Corinthians
15:20) it says, “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of
them that slept.” Now what are the firstfruits? The Jews knew the answer because it
was one of their yearly feasts. The firstfruits are the first sheaves of the grain, the first
clusters of grapes, the first ears of corn, in the season’s harvest. They were the first
visible tokens of the harvest yet to come. Beloved, the risen Christ is the first of millions
whom God will raise from the dead because Jesus was raised for us. Jesus said in (John
14:19) “....because I live, ye shall live also.” Beloved, when a Christian dies, the Bible
says that the soul and spirit go to be with the Lord, and the body goes to the grave. But
our bodies will not stay in the grave. When Jesus comes for His Church, the Bible says
in I Thessalonians 4:16 “For the Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven with a shout,
with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ
shall rise first. Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with
them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
What a great promise we have as the children of God! What about you, my friend, do
you know Him in a free pardon of sin? You can if you will call on Him now.

Blessed Hope
