Romans - The Heart of the Gospel
|
“(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to he the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.” (Romans 1:2-4)
|
Here in these three verses we have a threefold description of the Lord Jesus Christ as the
Saviour of the world. This is the very heart of the Gospel of God. God has sent His only
begotten Son into the world to save sinners. The apostle Paul tells us this in (I Timothy 1:15)
"This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the
world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. " There are three things that we want to look at
concerning Jesus Christ as the Saviour.
His Eternal Pre-existence Proves He is The Divine Saviour
The eternal pre-existence of Christ shows us that He is eternal Deity. The Lord Jesus had no
beginning, and He has no ending. In (Exodus 3:14) we see God speaking from the burning
bush telling Moses what to say to the children of Israel when they would ask Moses who had
sent him, “And God said unto Moses; I AM THAT I AM. and he said, Thus shalt thou say
unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses,
Thus shalt thou say auto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of
Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you. This is my name
for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.” The name "I AM THAT I AM",
means “The Eternal self-existent God.” This means that the Lord has no beginning. He has
always been. The Lord Jesus refers to Himself by this name in (John 8:58) where it says,
“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.” Before
Abraham was born the Lord Jesus was. He has always been. He is the Divine Saviour.
Although He was made flesh through the virgin birth, He was not made or created God. Yes,
He was made flesh of woman in the virgin birth, but not made God. You see, If He was made
God, He would have to have made Himself, because the Bible says (John 1:3), “All things
were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” And we know
that this would be foolish to even think about. The Lord Jesus Christ has always been. He is
from everlasting to everlasting. His eternal preexistence proves that He is the Divine Saviour,
the heart of the Gospel of God.
His Eternal Purpose Proves He Is A Divine Saviour
God the Father appointed the Lord Jesus to be the Redeemer before the world was created.
The Bible says in (I Peter 1:18-20) “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with
corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition
from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and
without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was
manifest in these last times for you,” Our redemption from the bondage of sin and death is
through the Lord Jesus Christ who was set forth to be the redeemer. This took place between
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as the everlasting covenant of salvation was made
before the foundation of the world. He became the mediator and surety of the everlasting
covenant, and when He died on the cross, arose from the dead, He ascended to the right hand
of the Father to be the Head of the church, our advocate, our High Priest, and our coming
King. God has raised Him up to be both Lord, and Christ. The Bible says in (Philippians 2:8-
11) "And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto
death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given
him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of
things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue
should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." These things again
prove that the Lord Jesus Christ is the divine Saviour, the very heart of the Gospel of God.
Not only do we see the Lord Jesus Christ as the Divine Saviour, but we also see Him as:
Here in verse three, it says, "Concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which made of the
seed of David according to the flesh;" Now again, we must never forget that Jesus Christ is
the heart of the Gospel. If anyone departs one step from Him, they depart from the gospel.
The Bible tells us in (Acts 4:12) “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none
other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
The Lord Jesus being the divine Son of God, had to become man in order to be the Saviour.
He had to be, not only Divine, but he had to be human as well. This was accomplished
through the virgin birth. We look back in the Old Testament Scriptures, and we see a line of
prophecies that leads us to the virgin birth of Christ as the means by which He took on Him
the human nature. We see in:
1. After the Fall
(Genesis 3:15) "And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and
her seed, it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."
2. In the Abrahamic Covenant
(Genesis 12:3) "And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in
thee shall all families of the earth be blessed."
3. Come through the Tribe of Judah
(Genesis 49:10) "The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his
feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be."
4. Come through the Lineage of David
(Psalms 89:33-37) "Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor
suffer my faithfulness to fail. My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone
out of my lips. Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. His seed
shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. It shall be established for ever as
the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah."
5. Fulfilled
blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was God."
troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of
salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found
favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and
shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and
the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the
house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the
angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto
her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, God."
6. The Purpose of His Humanity
(Hebrews 2:9) "But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the
suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste
death for every man."
A Risen Saviour (1 Corinthians 15:1-3)

"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;"
