Romans - Made According to the Seed of David
|
“Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;” (Romans 1:3)
|
In our last lesson we looked at the Lord Jesus Christ as the very heart of the Gospel of God. If
we step aside in any way from Jesus Christ, we step completely away from the gospel. Jesus
Christ is the heart of the Gospel. Take away Christ, you have no saving gospel.
Now we come to this verse that tells us that Jesus Christ was made of the seed of David
according to the flesh. This is what we want to look at in this lesson. What does it mean for
Christ to be made of the seed of David according to the flesh? Let us look first at:
It was prophesied that the Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, would come through
the lineage of David. Now what we want to keep in mind is, Christ is deity and human. He is the
God-Man. If we are to find salvation in Christ, we must then look for these two requirements.
The Saviour had to be God, and He had to be man. He had to be Divine, and He had to be
human. His divinity contains the power, righteousness, and life to save, but He had to become
human in order to secure for us, and to communicate to us this great salvation. Jesus is the Son
of God from all eternity, but He had to become the Son of Man. This was accomplished through
the virgin birth. Jesus became the Son of Man through the virgin Mary who was of the house
and lineage of David.
It is also prophesied that Christ would be the Messiah, the King who would rule over the nation
of Israel. He would be the King of the Jews. The lineage through which the Messiah would come
is the lineage of King David.
In order for us to better understand this, let us trace some of these promises through the
Scriptures.
1. God Promised Abraham in (Genesis 12:3), “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse
him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” Here this promise
is very general. God at this time doesn’t give any details as to how this will be accomplished. But
we see that through Abraham’s seed all the families of the earth will be blessed. This is a
reference to the Lord Jesus Christ, through whom salvation and restoration would come to both,
Jew and Gentile.
2. We see next, that the Lord Jesus would come through the tribe of Judah. The Bible says in
(Genesis 49:10) “The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his
feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.” This is a reference
to the Lord Jesus Christ, who is called here “Shiloh,” which means the “Prince of Peace.” The
tribe of Judah is the tribe through which the rulers of Israel were to come. As the priests were to
be from the tribe of Levi, so the kings of Israel were to be of the tribe of Judah.
3. Then we see in (2 Samuel 7: 12-16), where God promised king David, “And when thy days
be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed afier thee, which shall
proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my
name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall
be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes
of the children of men: But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul,
whom I put away before thee. And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever
before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.” Now In this passage we see several things
God promised David.
1) In verse 12 David would have a son who would succeed him, and establish his kingdom.
2) In verse 13, this son, who was Solomon, would build God’s house, the temple, rather than
David, and that his kingdom would be established forever.
3) In verses 14-15, God promises to chasten him for his sins, but His mercy would not depart
from him, as it did from Saul, Israel’s first king, when God took the kingdom from him.
4) In verse 16, we see that David’s house, kingdom, and throne would be established forever.
Now this covenant that God made with David did not guarantee uninterrupted rule by David’s
family, and as we see in the Babylonian captivity, it was interrupted, but this covenant does
promise that the right to rule would always remain in the house and lineage of David. The Lord
Jesus Christ is the ultimate fulfillment of these promises as we see in (Matthew 1:1) “The book
of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” And we see in (Luke
1:26-33), “And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee,
named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of
David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou
that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she
saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this
should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name
JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall
give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for
ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”
Now at this present time the Lord Jesus is not ruling from the throne of David, as He is sat down
at the right hand of God, on God’s throne. (Hebrews 1:3) “Who being the brightness of his
glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power,
when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”
And in (Hebrews 12:2) it says, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who
for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at
the right hand of the throne of God.”
At the present time, the Lord Jesus is fulfilling the office of Priest. The Bible says in (Hebrews 4:
14-16) “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the
Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be
touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet
without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy,
and find grace to help in time of need.” The Lord Jesus is our great High Priest at the throne of
God. He is the Head of the church, the Saviour of the body. And soon He will also take the
office of King of kings and Lord of lords.
Yes, Jesus Christ is coming back again to sit on the throne of David here on this earth. The Bible
says in (Acts 15:13-18), “And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men
and brethren, hearken unto me. Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the
Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. And to this agree the words of the
prophets; as it is written, After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David,
which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof and I will set it up: That the
residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called,
saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. Known unto God are all his works from the
beginning of the world.”
Daniel prophesied of this kingdom in (Daniel 2:44-45), “And in the days of these kings shall the
God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be
left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall
stand for ever. Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without
hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the
great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is
certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.”
