II. Some Names of the Bible

     1. The Book (Psalms 40:7; Hebrews 10:7) This Book is the Book of God,
not the book of men. It is God's Holy Word that is forever settled in Heaven
(Psalms 119:89). The word
"Bible" is not found in the text of the Bible. Our English
word
"Bible" comes from the Greek words "Bibloa" and "Biblion" which means
"the Book." It is called "The Book" in Psalms 40:7 and Hebrews 10:7. The title
"Bible" was given by John Christianson of Constantinople around 398-404 A.D.

       2. The Word of God (Isaiah 40:6-8; Hebrews 4:12) This is one of the most
powerful names given to the Bible because it signifies the divine authority if God.

     3.
The Scriptures (Daniel 10:21; 2 Timothy 3:15-17) This name means "the
Writings"
, referring to the written Word of God.

     4.
The Oracles (2 Samuel 16:23; 1 Peter 4:11) The means the written Word
of God and the place where it was kept and taught.

     5.
Old and New Testament (Hebrews 9:15) The Old Testament refers to the
writings from Genesis to Malachi, and the covenants of God made in them. The
New Testament is the writings from Matthew to Revelation, and has to do with the
new covenant God made with His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

     6.
The Commandments (Leviticus 26:1-7; John 15:10) These
commandments were given by the authority of God. To refuse to obey is an act of
rebellion.

     7.
The Promises (Romans 9:4-5; 15:8) There are many promises that God
has made to His people written in His Word. These promises are so sure to us that
they can be called equally the Word of God.

     8.
The Scripture of Truth (Daniel 10:21) This is not only a name given, but a
description as well. The word
"Scripture" means, "the Writings of God". So we
see that the writings of God are truth. (Psalms 119:151)

     9.
The Word of Life (Philippians 2:16) This refers to the Word of God that
brings salvation, eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 1:16, 17; 1 Peter 1:
22-25)

III. The Books of the Bible

Old Testament / 39 Books

New Testament / 27 Books

*Note: The books commonly called the Apocrypha, not being divine inspiration (Luke 24:
27, 44; Romans 3:2), are no part of the canon or (rule)of the Scripture, and therefore are
of no authority to the church, nor to be any otherwise approved or made use of than
other human writers. -

The Bible, God's Holy Word
The Bible is God's Book. He wants us to read it, believe it and obey it. It is our
guide for living. Our new spiritual life is the product of the Bible, therefore we and
the Bible go together. As Christians, we and the Bible are inseparable.

1. Our being is by the breath of God (Genesis 2:7)
2. The Bible is by the breath of God (2 Timothy 3:16)
3. Our spiritual birth is by the breath of God (John 3:8)
*Born of the Father (John 1:12-13)
*Born of the Spirit (John 3:3-8)
*Born of the Son (1 Peter 1:23-25)

Dr. Robert G. Lee, a great Southern Baptist preacher, preaching in Dallas, TX in
1936 said,
"The Bible is our greatest national asset...that supreme Book,
supernatural in it's origin, divine in it's authorship, human in it's penmanship,
infallible in it's authority, inexhaustible in it's adequacy, a miracle book of
diversity in unity, infinite in scope, universal in interest, eternal in duration,
personal in application, inestimable in value, unmeasurable in power,
unsurpassed in literary beauty, unequaled in simplicity of expression, immortal
in it's hopes, the masterpiece of God"

Lesson Aim: In this lesson, we want to learn some facts about the Bible and the
books that make up the Bible.
