Introduction to First Thessalonians
|
The book of First Thessalonians is a very practical book for Christians. It is an
excellent book for Christian growth and it is a good book for young converts to read
and study as they begin their Christian life for the Lord. A good understanding of this
book will produce courage for steadfastness, compassion for the saints, concern for
Let us obey the instructions of the Bible to "Study to show thyself approved unto
God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
truth." (2 Timothy 2:15)
Structure of the Book
I. The Statistics
52nd Book of the Bible
5 Chapters
89 Verses
1,857 Words
3 Questions
II. The Author
1.The Divine Author: The Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; 2
Samuel 23:1-2; Jeremiah 36:27-32) All of the Bible is the inspired Word of
god. The Holy Spirit moved holy men of god to Speak and write the things of
God that He wanted written. David is an example of the Spirit moving (2
Samuel 23:1-2); and Jeremiah is an example of the Spirit moving him to speak
and write and,or have written (Jeremiah 36:27-32). It would be good to read
the whole 36th chapter of Jeremiah.
2. The Human Writer: Paul (1 Thessalonians 1:1; 2:18; 3:5; the personal
pronoun "I" refers to Paul; 5:27)
III. The Date
Bible students differ as to when Paul wrote this letter. Most seem to agree that it
was one of Paul's earliest letters written around 54 A.D. from Corinth. It would have
been about 23 or 24 years after the crucifixion of Christ.
IV. The Purpose for Writing the Book
1. Commendation: Paul wanted to commend the church and to express his joy for
their steadfastness under the persecutions and afflictions they faced (1:6; 3:1-7)
2. Defense: Paul wanted to refute false charges that were made against him and his
companions by those who were enemies of the Gospel of Christ (2:1-13).
3. Instruction: Paul wanted to instruct the church as to their love for each other, to
work, to reassure them concerning their loved ones who had fallen asleep (died), and
to instruct them concerning the coming of the Lord, respect their church leaders and
to live a life of holiness. All these things and more will be apparent as we study the
Book.
V. The Theme
It is hard to settle on any one theme in this book, because there are many. A
close reading of all five chapters will reveal a threefold theme:
1. Confirmation of Foundation Truths
2 Commands for Continual Holy Living
3. Comfort Concerning Death, Resurrection, and Rapture
