Daniel: The Captivity of Judah
|
The Book of Daniel is to the Old Testament what the book of Revelation is to the
New Testament. One cannot be understood without the other. In the Book of
Daniel, we see the prophetic picture of the Gentile nations ruling the governments of
this world until the Lord Jesus comes and sets up His glorious kingdom.
I. The Capture of Jerusalem and Judah (1:1-2)
- About 605 B.C. (First of three invasions of Jerusalem)
- Recorded in 2 Corinthians 36:5-21
II. The Reason for the Capture
- Forsaken the Laws of God (Isaiah 24:1-12)
- Ignored the Lord's Sabbath Year (Jeremiah 34:12-22)
Note: For 490 years, Israel had forsaken God, lived in wickedness, worshiped idols
and forgot God. The Bible tells us that one day in seven belongs to God and every
seventh year was the sabbath year. They were to store up in the sixth year and rest the
seventh. For 490 years, they ignored this. One seventh of 490 is seventy years, the
exact time of the Babylonian captivity. See Galatians 6:7..
III. The Times of the Gentiles
- Begins in Daniel 1:1-2
- Will Continue until Jesus Comes (Luke 21:20-24)
